After all, playing twelve different versions of Sleigh Ride with every conceiveable type of ensemble can wear on you pretty quickly! That’s why I felt so refreshed to find recordings of the O Antiphons (complete with Solesmes notation!) over at the Liturgy Blog.

In the Roman Catholic church, the O Antiphons are prayers that have been sung at Vespers since at least the eighth century. The antiphons are sung every day from December 17th-23rd to prepare for Christmas, and sound quite different from the Christmas tunes we hear on the radio. They’re simple, soothing, beautiful works–a great way to bring out the peaceful, reflective side of the season.
