One reason I’ve stuck around in Raleigh for the past six years is their wonderful Parks and Recreation Department. They offer all kinds of great classes and adventure getaways that are a great way to spark your creativity.
I’ve found that if I just sit around and practice all the time, my technique gets better but my playing loses some of its expressive luster. I need something to play ABOUT, and often I find a wealth of ideas to explore musically by learning about new people or things (musical or not). So…
I just signed up for a beginner drawing class! It’ll meet over the summer, and I’ll learn how to draw for real. Currently I can draw a mean cartoon trombone, and a variety of funny stick people, but that’s about it. I can already feel the creative juices flowing, and I’m excited about all the things I’ll learn. It’ll be especially neat to see what kind of new perspectives drawing and using color adds to my trombone playing and music teaching. Naturally, I’m a very aural and tactile person…so I look forward to playing around in the more exotic visual realm.
Look for my masterpieces on the blog over the summer–I’ll start posting them sometime after class starts in July!

This is pretty far back in your archives, but the title was enticing. I have a BFA, (with a minor in trombone performance). I could never understand why some people wanted to separate fine arts from music, as if you are supposed to do one or the other: so hard for me to choose, so I do both.
Jerry’s Artarama has a class I am sure you will enjoy: Finger Painting for adults. If you go to the Fairgrounds Flea Market on the weekends you just may see Allen Montague in one of the indoor spaces he uses as his studio. If you have the time, the Fine Arts League of Cary will hold a reception for its juried show June 4 at the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Holly Springs. The Cary Photographic Artists has selected pieces on display in group exhibit at the Raleigh Convention Center through May 24. If you look closely you will find my photograph!
