A Gig for the Record Books

April 19th, 2008 · No Comments

birthday show
This week, when I wasn’t playing for The Yeomen of the Guard, I played a very interesting, record-breaking gig. This was the shortest gig with the smallest audience I’ve ever played, and is quite possibly the most whimsical gig ever as well. :-)

On Monday, I received a call from a man in Pennsylvania whose sister in Raleigh was turning 60 years old the next day. The man wanted me to walk into his sister’s office in the middle of the day and play “Happy Birthday” on trombone. What a lighthearted, fun, and random way to celebrate one’s sister’s birthday!

So, I woke up the next day, made a tag that said “Happy Birthday,” and taped the tag and a huge silver bow to my head. I wore a bright pink party dress and invited Andrew to be my camera crew. I think we really freaked out the guys who were cleaning up the parking lot of the office, but gave the people in the sister’s office quite a good time. I’ll definitely have to do stuff like this more often!
